About
AEDs
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device that evaluates the heart rhythm of a victim of sudden cardiac arrest, is capable of delivering an electrical charge to the heart if needed, and does not require the expertise of a medical professional.
In this country, 4000 people experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) each week. SCA is a life-threatening condition where the heart, instead of pumping blood as it normally does, quivers ineffectively with no circulation.
The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that the survival rate for SCA is less than 5% with CPR alone. When an early defibrillation program provides immediate CPR and delivers the first shock from an AED within the first three minutes, survival rates are as high as 74%.
Communities & businesses have deployed Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in places such as shopping malls, athletic facilities, schools, corporate offices, private homes - wherever people live, work, and play.
AEDS ARE NOT ALL ALIKE
In corporate and community settings, it is very important to select an AED designed for lay responders. Ease of use, effectiveness, reliability, and safety features should be considered. Details to explore include accuracy of rhythm analysis, waveform execution and performance history. Remember, equipment should fit the user and the environment.
